What is Parallels Desktop?

Parallels Desktop is a virtual machine software that allows you to run Windows on Intel Mac and M1 Mac without restarting. It has more than 30 one-click tools that can make every task on Mac and Windows simple and easy.

Nevertheless, it has some drawbacks that make you want to uninstall it, such as taking up a lot of space, paying to use, lack of support for games and multimedia, and unable to start. If you want to uninstall it, please continue reading this blog to learn how to remove it from your Mac manually and automatically.

Why you may consider uninstalling Parallels Desktop on your Mac?

Parallels Desktop makes it seamless to share data between the host OS and the virtual environment. However, the overall requirement to run Parallels Desktop on older laptops is bit too high. If you are running Parallels Desktop with a Mac has less than 8 GB ram, it slows down the system quite badly. How to completely uninstall Parallels on Mac with CleanMyMac X

The app I use for uninstalling apps and removing all associated files as well is CleanMyMac X. It’s easy to use and shows exactly all the apps I’ve ever installed on my MacBook.

Here’s how to use its Uninstaller tool:

  • Download and launch CleanMyMac X — get it here for free.
  • Go to Uninstaller in the sidebar.
  • Uninstaller module in CleanMyMacX
  • Check the box next to Parallels Desktop.
  • Press the Uninstall button. 

To make sure that no cache or temporary files are left after you removed Parallels, consider using CleanMyMac X’s System Junk module. If you want to free up disk space, use it to delete tons of unnecessary files stored on your computer.

As you see, uninstalling Parallels is easy. The real trouble comes when you need to remove its leftovers. If you don’t want to navigate your Mac looking for those, you can try using CleanMyMac X to delete them. The Leftovers tab in the Uninstaller module will show you all the remaining files that take up some space.

Remove Parallels Desktop virtual machines

Now the application is completely removed from the system. Unfortunately removing the Parallels Desktop application does not remove the virtual machines that you had installed on it. Unless you delete the virtual machines manually they will keep taking up a significant part of your storage.

  • Parallels virtual machines are created with the ​.pvm extension​. Therefore follow the steps below if you would like to search for the files with the .pvm extension,
  • Hit command + space together to bring up Spotlight Search.
  • Type .pvm on the search bar.
  • All your .pvm files will be listed here.
  • Now that you know what .pvm files are remaining in your system, let’s go ahead and open Finder to find these items.
  • Right-click on the .pvm file and select ​Move to Trash
  • Go to Trash
  • Right-click on the .pvm file and click on Delete Immediately.
  • Delete imediately .PVM files
  • Repeat the process for all the .pvm files that you have on your Mac. This process will delete all the virtual machines and will save a significant amount of storage in your Macbook.

How to Uninstall Parallels Desktop on Mac Manually

  • Click the Parallels icon in the tools bar and choose Quit Parallels Desktop.
  • Quit Parallels Desktop on Mac
  • Open Finder, select Applications, and find Parallels Desktop.
  • Right-click on its icon and move it to Trash.
  • Uninstall Parallels Desktop App
  • Find and delete Parallels-related files in the following folders.

~/Library
~/Library/Application Support
~/Library/Application Scripts
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Cookies
~/Library/Preferences
~/Library/Saved Application State
~/Library/Containers
~/Library/Group Containers
~/Library/Application Support/CrashReporter
~/Library/WebKit
/Library
/Library/Preferences
/Users/Shared
/private/var/db
/private/var

  • Empty your Trash.

The easiest way to uninstall Parallels from Mac

Steps on how to remove Parallels using App Cleaner & Uninstaller:

  • Quit Parallels Desktop. For this, click on its icon in the toolbar and select Quit Parallels Desktop.
  • Launch App Cleaner & Uninstaller and wait until it finishes scanning your application.
  • Select Parallels Desktop and click the Remove button.
  • Confirm the uninstallation.
  • By default, App Cleaner & Uninstaller removes all files to Trash. So empty the Trash and reboot your Mac. In this case, you can be sure that no leftovers of the virtual machine will remain on your disk.

  • If you have already removed Parallels into the Trash, with App Cleaner & Uninstaller, you can find its remaining files. We recommend removing all leftovers as they are just junk files and eat up valuable space on your hard drive.

How to find Parallels Desktop remaining files:

  • In-App Cleaner & Uninstaller, go to the Remaining Files section.
  • Select all unneeded leftovers.
  • Click the Remove button and confirm the removal.

As you can see, the recommended method of desktop removal from the Parallels’ website leaves leftover files on your Mac. Unfortunately, such useless service files may account for gigabytes of junk on your disk, and they may cause issues. If you want to keep your Mac clean, use App Cleaner & Uninstaller, which removes applications from your Mac both wholly and quickly.
