UPS systems are power supply units that protect and regulate a computer’s electricity. They also provide surge protection to ensure devices remain safe. In today’s scenario, individuals, businesses, and industries have realised the advantages of having an uninterrupted power supply. They rely on a computer power supply from a device that offers such benefits. This article will probe into some of the types prevalent in the industry today. It will further highlight the features and benefits of each type for the reader’s convenience.

The UPS power supply is the heart of the UPS system. It includes all components required to convert AC power from the utility company into clean, stable DC power for the computer. The UPS power supply typically contains a battery or battery pack and an inverter, which converts the DC power into AC power to run one’s computer system. It also offers surge protection devices such as capacitors or MOVs.

Types of UPS

1) Online UPS

  • Online UPS is an uninterrupted power supply that protects computers from surges and spikes. Online UPS systems include a battery backup and a power conditioner to manage the voltage input. This activity can help prevent damage or loss of data during power outages or when the grid is experiencing brownouts or blackouts.
  • Online UPS provides a seamless transition between the AC source and battery backup mode when the AC source goes offline temporarily due to short circuits, overloads or sags on grid lines causing momentary blackouts at homes & offices, etc.
  • For an online UPS unit to work correctly, some basic configuration changes must be done before implementation. People can even set automatic shutdown points where their pc starts shutting down automatically once backup batteries are discharged beyond certain levels without any user intervention required.

2) Offline UPS

Offline UPS is an uninterruptible power supply that does not contain any batteries but instead uses a transformer to convert the mains voltage to lower voltages. Offline UPSs primarily get installed where one needs to shut down systems quickly, such as during an emergency shutdown or to change over from one system to another.

3) Standby UPS

  • Standby UPS is a device that provides emergency backup power to a computer. These get designed for uninterrupted operation in case of a power failure. They get used to servers, telecom equipment, medical devices and other high-end technology. The high uninterruptible power source (UPS) system uses batteries to provide emergency backup power while connecting directly to the wall outlet without an inverter or converter – ensuring maximum reliability and performance during brownouts or blackouts.
  • The standby UPS provides temporary backup should the primary source fail unexpectedly but will eventually run out of energy when left unattended for extended periods without being connected to an external source of electricity, such as an AC outlet or generator system installed in the premises.

4) Line-interactive UPS

  • A line-interactive UPS is an uninterruptible power supply that uses a transformer to convert the incoming AC voltage to DC. This activity makes it possible for the UPS to charge batteries and continue providing power even during outages.
  • They switch between two modes. It provides electrical energy from its internal battery system or external power sources when operating online. When operating offline, it does not receive any input voltage from external sources but provides electricity stored in its internal battery system.

Conclusion

The computer power supply is a primary component that needs to stay updated to help protect one’s computer and its data from power fluctuations in the electrical grid. Users must choose the right type of UPS system for their needs. Thus, these products are highly preferred in the market today.
